The settlement includes $2.2 billion in upfront payments of $3 billion to the manufacturer, which is in the midst of a federal investigation into drug makers' marketing practices.
The settlement is expected to last until the end of January, but the company has not yet reached a decision on the amount.
The company, which has about $10 billion in cash, said its decision to pay the amount it has agreed to make in the case was "a significant step forward in the development of the proposed settlement."
Pfizer said it would continue to make the payments in a "cash-for-delay" agreement.
In a letter to U. S. prosecutors Thursday, Pfizer said it would pay $3.1 billion in upfront payments to the company in a settlement of all claims it makes regarding its blockbuster cholesterol drug, Plavix.
The company also agreed to pay $1.1 billion in cash, or about $2.4 billion, to the New York-based firm for the first time since it introduced Crestor in 2003.
Pfizer said it had not reached any agreement to pay upfront payments.
